English Martyrs’ has a strong and vibrant Eco Council consisting of 13 eco-conscious pupils. Mrs Ridings looks after us along with Miss Ironfield and Mrs Howarth.
Eco Council get involved with many different activities and campaigns in school. Throughout 2025/2026, this has included:
Taking part in the Food Waste project with the University of Lancashire. We helped Mrs Ridings identify what we should focus on and what matters to us and tested out the food waste questionnaires.
Eco Club (which consists of Eco Councillors and pupils from Year 3 and 4) planted flowers, helped maintain the Prayer Garden and SNUG gardens through weeding and started to understand what nature thrives in our outdoor spaces.
Taking part in Assemblies for the Plastic Count and Earth Day to spread our awareness to all within School.
Taking part in the RSPB Schools’ Birdwatch (we have parakeets!) and the Plastic Count.
Litter Picking in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy and Preston City Council.
For the past three years, we have been awarded the Eco Schools award with Merit and this year, we are hoping we can achieve a distinction.
We will try and achieve this by signing up to Count your Carbon and become more involved in monitoring how much energy we use as a school. We also have plans to fundraise for conservation charities because a lot of us have a passion for looking after endangered species and spreading awareness of their plight. We will also be continuing our Food Waste project.
Please have a look at the work that we have done over the past year and if you have any ideas about what we can do to raise awareness or projects that we can undertake, please let us know!
Check back soon for Autumn 2 Term updates!
We met Rhianna from W1N Lighting Solutions Limited who chatted to us all about sustainability!

Our Eco Council is led by Mrs Ridings & Miss Ironfield together with children from Reception to Year 6.
So far, they have established recycling of paper at school, securing 4 paper recycle bins from Preston City Council; they have campaigned across school for less use of one-use materials such as plastic bottles; designed posters to remind people to switch lights off when they are not needed and are working towards the Silver Eco Schools Award.
As part of our whole school improvement, we have planted trees to encourage wildlife into an urban area and have developed our outdoor learning.
We have followed Pope Francis' words and works for Laudato Si' ~ His letter addressed to every person on the planet, asking us all to protect our common home...The Earth.
'The earth is God's gift to us,
full of beauty and wonder.
And it belongs to everyone.'
